GRAND OPEN OF HONG KONG NATIONAL GEOPARK

Hong Kong National Geopark was opened in 3 November 2009. The opening ceremony was officiated by Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang. Other officiating guests included the Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR), Mr Wang Min; Director-General of the MLR's Department of Geological Environment, Mr Guan Fengjun; member of the International Expert Group for Global Geoparks Network, Professor Ibrahim Komoo; member of the honorary committee of Global Geoparks Network, Dr Wolfgang Eder; Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau; Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mr Alan Wong; Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Mr James Tien; Chairman of the Country and Marine Parks Board, Professor Nora Tam; and Convenor of the Task Force of Hong Kong Geopark, Professor Jim Chi-yung.

In the same occasion, it was announced that Hong Kong National Geopark established sistering relationship with four geoparks from mainland and oversea. They are Yandangshan Geopark of China, Itoigawa Geopark of Japan, English Riviera Geopark of UK and Kanawinka Geopark of Australia. The sistership relationship will enhance the network of information exchange and pubilcity between geoparks.

HONG KONG NATIONAL GEOPARK

The National Geopark Assessment Committee has conducted a complete assessment on the establishment and management of Hong Kong Geopark and approved it meeting all the requirements of National Geopark Status at Beijing in September 2009.

HKSAR Chief Executive expressed that through the national geopark network, Hong Kong can gain relevant experience, preserve valuable geological and topographical resources more comprehensively, raise the public's awareness about geo-science, and foster the development of eco-tourism by adding new attractions.
