Asia Pacific Knowledge Sharing Platform in Hong Kong Geopark

Hong Kong Geopark in December 2013 brings together geopark managers from all over the Asia Pacific region under a series of networking activities. After the successful conclusion of the first "Asia Pacific Geotourism Conference 2013" and the "Knowledge Sharing Workshop for Asia Pacific Geopark Managers" on 1 December 2013 and 5 December 2013 respectively, delegates from a number of Korean National Geoparks planning to apply for membership of the Global Geoparks Network paid a visit to Hong Kong Geopark from 16 to 18 December 2013.

During the visit, Hong Kong Geopark shared our experience and insights on geopark management, science popularization as well as the development of tourism promotion and interpretation system. These have fostered the role of the Hong Kong Geopark as an important intellectual platform for knowledge exchange in the region.

The first reassessment of Recommended Geopark Guides  
The first reassessment of Recommended Geopark Guides

To upkeep the professionalism of Recommended Geopark Guides (R2Gs), they are required to be reassessed once every two years. The first biennial reassessment interview was successfully held on 7 December 2013 where Dr. KM Yeung from Hong Kong Global Geopark, Dr. Young Ng from Association for Geoconservation, Hong Kong and Dr. Masahiro Aoki from Geological Survey of Japan commended the work of R2Gs and shared their views and experience with the group.

A total of 32 candidates are due for the reassessment. The results, which are based on their experience in guiding tours, hours of continuous education and their performance in the interview, will be released by the end of 2013.

Meeting with Recommended Geopark Guide

A meeting titled "Hong Kong Global Geopark and reassessment of Recommended Geopark Guide (R2G) 2015" was hosted on 1 December 2013. The meeting is well attended by around 30 R2Gs. During the meeting, representatives of Hong Kong Geopark shared with the R2G their latest works for revalidation in 2015 as a member of the Global Geoparks Network and details of the R2G reassessment. Participants have taken the chance to share their geopark guiding experience.

Hong Kong Geopark School visited Japan Geoparks

Dedicated to building a continuous partnership and to foster science popularization, Hong Kong Geopark has proactively engaged a group of students and faculties from one of the Hong Kong Geopark Schools through running a Student Exchange Programme between Hong Kong Geopark and Japan Geoparks. During the student exchange programme, over 100 young delegations of both Hong Kong Geopark and Itoigawa Global Geopark gathered on 8 November 2013 at the Itoigawa Elementary School. Participants from the Hong Kong Geopark have also taken the chance to visit a number of geosites and to visit the locals in Unzen Volcanic Area Global Geopark and Aso Geopark from 2 to 4 November 2013.

Visit to Yanqing and Yantaishan Global Geopark

Representatives of Hong Kong Global Geopark have taken the chance to visit Yanqing Global Geopark on 2 November 2013 which is one of the newborns of the Global Geoparks Network. This visit is dedicated to fostering closer relationship among the China Geoparks Network.

As invited by the China Geoparks Network, representative from Hong Kong Geopark gave a talk to 15 African geopark managers on 4 November 2013 during the visit to Yantaishan Global Geopark. Hong Kong Geopark shared her experience in science popularization and networking during the talk. This has showcased Hong Kong Geopark's continuous contribution to the China and Global Geopark Networks.

Student Exchange Programme between Hong Kong Geopark & Japan Geoparks

With the support of Asia Pacific Geoparks Network, a group of students and their teachers from one of the Hong Kong Geopark Schools is visiting Unzen Volcanic Area Global Geopark, Itoigawa Global Geopark and Aso Geopark from 2 to 9 November 2013. Participants would visit a number of geosites including active volcanos in the geoparks and geological museums under the guidance of Japanese geological experts. They would meet the local communities through various engagement activities including farming and fishing activities.

Mainland media group visited Hong Kong Global Geopark

China National Radio together with provincial radio stations from Heilongjiang, Henan, Shandong, Inner Mongolia and Tianjin visited Hong Kong Global Geopark on September 25, 2013. Apart from experiencing the natural wonder of hexagonal columns, the group also took the opportunity to understand the objectives for the establishment of Hong Kong Geopark and the unique measures of geoconservation.

Hong Kong participated in Asia-Pacific Geoparks Network Symposium in Jeju, Korea

The third Asia-Pacific Geoparks Network Jeju Symposium was held in Jeju Global Geopark starting from 8 September 2013. During the conference, we shared our experience on sister geopark activities which goes beyond exchange and promotion as well as our insights on the cultural differences between East and West in the geopark networks for a better communication and network cooperation in future. In the conference, the Global Geoparks Network Bureau illustrated the revalidation requirements with specific examples of Hong Kong Geopark including floating kiosk, geopark hotel, geo gourmet and international promotion.

2013 Student Exchange Programme between Hong Kong Geopark & sister Itoigawa Geopark in Japan

A group of young guests, including students and teachers, from Itoigawa Global Geopark in Japan, visit Hong Kong Geopark during 21-25 August, participating in the third exchange programme between the two sister geoparks. They will explore the geological, ecological and cultural sites of interest and interact with some Hong Kong students during this meaningful programme.

Visit to the Ministry of Land and Resources and Fangshan Global Geopark

Representative of Hong Kong Global Geopark paid a visit the Ministry of Land and Resources on 20 August 2013 and reported to them the major work of Hong Kong Geopark in the aspects of conservation and management, science popularization, school education, visitor centres, networking and geotourism.

The representatives also visited Fangshan Global Geopark during their stay in Beijing to share and exchange practical experience of geopark management and science popularization work. While in Beijing, the representatives also met with Chinese geopark experts and assessors in order to prepare for the revalidation in 2015 as a member of the Global Geoparks Network.

Itoigawa Trade Council visited Hong Kong Geopark

21 members of the Itoigawa Trade Council visited High Island Geo Area of Hong Kong Global Geopark on 8 July to experience the natural wonders of the hexagonal rock columns and learn about its formation process. This activity was arranged by Itoigawa sister geopark and effectively enhanced the exchange and cooperation between the two places.

Prize Presentation Ceremony for Geopark Schools

A prize presentation ceremony was held on 1 July 2013 for 8 Geopark Schools, in recognition of their active participation in the Geopark Schools Programme in the past year.

Over 450 students of the 8 Geopark Schools received award under the Geopark Schools Programme, among them over 70 have gained a higher level of "Ammonite" award, for actively joining two or more Geopark-related activities, such as field trip to geosites and ceramic workshop. The 8 Geopark Schools which attended the prize presentation ceremony are Kau Yan School, Sheng Kung Hui Wing Chun Primary School, Sha Tau Kok Central Primary School, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Li Ka Shing College, Sheng Kung Hui Tang Shiu Kin Secondary School, Kau Yan College, Hong Kong Taoist Association Tang Hin Memorial Secondary School, and Hong Kong Fanling Lutheran Secondary School.

After the prize presentation ceremony, a talk entitled “What’s the Use of Fossils?” was presented by Dr. Ng Tin Wai, postdoctoral researcher of Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The talk explained the value of fossils in various aspects such as fossil fuel, climate change study, evolution study, and introduced fossils of Hong Kong. Students were very interested and raised a lot of questions after the talk. The whole event was later ended with a guided tour to the Hong Kong Museum of History.

Joint E-Classroom Conducted by Itoigawa, Hong Kong and Aso Geoparks

An E-classroom session was conducted for over 150 primary school students of Hong Kong Geopark on 17 June 2013.

The session involved not only Hong Kong and Itoigawa geoparks, but also Aso Geopark, which is part of the Japanese Geoparks Network. It took place in Itoigawa City, which is the center of Itoigawa Global Geopark, and at the Aso Volcano Museum. Curators from both geoparks gave a talk on the special fault line in Itoigawa and the great caldera in Aso. The chair of Itoigawa Geopark also sent messages to the students. The Hong Kong students were very excited to "meet" the presenters from Japan and keen to ask questions! This was the first E-classroom conducted by the three geoparks together, and it has greatly aroused the students' interest in geology.

After the session, Dr. Yeung Ka-ming, Senior Geopark Officer of Hong Kong Geopark, visited Itoigawa Junior High school and gave a talk to 158 students. In his talk he introduced the similarities and differences between Itoigawa and Hong Kong geoparks in areas such as geology and environment, and highlighted the friendship between the two geoparks, including the various exchange activities which benefited both geoparks. Several of the students will also be visiting Hong Kong this summer to join an annual exchange program between Hong Kong and Itoigawa. This will further enhance cooperation and international exchange between the two sister geoparks.

Hong Kong Global Geopark signed a cooperation agreement with the Unzen Volcanic Area Global Geopark

To enhance the sustainable development of geotourism, geo-education and geoheritage, Hong Kong Global Geopark of China signed a cooperation agreement with the Unzen Volcanic Area Global Geopark, Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan on 15 June 2013.

Unzen Volcanic Area Geopark is a famous volcano in the world which is still active and demonstrates "the coexistence of an active volcano and human beings". Hong Kong Geopark, on the other hand, displays magnificent volcanic columns, which are remains of volcano eruptions 140 million years ago. Both of a volcanic landscape of different ages, the cooperation agreement will help strengthen the existing relationship between the two places as well as offering further collaboration opportunities in relation to volcano and volcanology. This will be achieved through sharing scientific information and experience in best management practices, as well as collaborating in areas such as tourism promotion, research, education and training. It will also allow the two geoparks to work together to raise public understanding and awareness of wise use of geoheritage for sustainable development.

Sharing work of Hong Kong Geopark with Kitakyushu Museum

Representatives of Hong Kong Geopark shared their work with staff of the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History and Human History in Japan, on 14 June 2013. The city of Kitakyushu is planning to establish a geopark. The sharing has covered the major areas of work of Hong Kong Geopark as well as some practical suggestions.

On 13 June 2013, the staff of Hong Kong Geopark also visited Aso Geopark of the Japanese Geoparks Network. Both with a volcanic landscape, the two geoparks shared scientific information and exchanged experience in research and science popularization of volcanology as well as best management practices.

The sharing and visit were major work areas of Hong Kong Geopark in facilitating cooperation and exchange with different geoparks in order to contribute to the betterment of the Geopark Movement.

Staff at High Island Geo Trail introduced acidic volcanic columns of Hong Kong

An E- Classroom session was conducted for a group of junior high school students of Germany's Bergstrasse-Odenwald Geopark on 4 June 2013. It took place in the Messel Pit World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, which is the north entrance gate of the Global Geopark Bergstraße-Odenwald. Here the students were able to "see" the magnificent acidic volcanic columns of Hong Kong Geopark, through real-time presentation by a staff at the High Island Geo Trail of Hong Kong Geopark on the other side. The Global E-Classroom session not only introduced Hong Kong Geopark to the students, but most importantly aroused their interest in geology and broadened their horizon.

Hong Kong Global Geopark signed a cooperation agreement with the Messel Pit World Heritage Site

To enhance the sustainable development of geotourism, geo-education and geoheritage, Hong Kong Global Geopark of China signed a cooperation agreement with the Messel Pit World Heritage Site on June 2. Messel Pit is a partner of Germany’s Bergstrasse-Odenwald Geopark and is the richest site in the world for understanding the living environment 47 million years ago (during the Eocene). It provides unique information about the early stages of the evolution of mammals and includes exceptionally well-preserved mammal fossils.

"Hong Kong Global Geopark of China signed a sister arrangement with Bergstrasse-Odenwald in 2011. This cooperation will further strengthen the existing relationship between the two geoparks and allow opportunities for further collaboration in geopark conservation and scientific research for sustainable development," an AFCD spokesman said.

Advisory Body Supports Hong Kong Global Geopark's Work Plan to Prepare for Revalidation

Hong Kong Global Geopark presented its work plan for revalidation as a member of the Global Geoparks network (GGN) at the Country and Marine Parks Board (CMPB) meeting on 23 May 2013. CMPB members include academic experts, geologists, representatives of non-governmental organizations and officials from the government.

To prepare for revalidation in 2015 as a member of the network, Hong Kong Global Geopark is focusing on eight main areas: Management and Conservation, Geopark Brand Visibility, Local Engagement, Accessibility of Geopark Information, Visitor Centres, Science Popularisation, Geopark Guides, and Exchange and Sharing.

The CMPB members provided valuable comments on the work plan and expressed full support for the preparation work.

Visit to Secretariat of Chinese Geoparks Network and the Ministry of Land and Resources

Representative of Hong Kong Global Geopark paid a visit and reported to the Secretariat of Chinese Geoparks Netowrk (CGN) and the Ministry of Land and Resources on 21 and 22 May 2013 respectively the two major exchange activities held in Hong Kong in the past year: Roundtable Conference organized in October 2012 and Workshop for Geopark Managers in March 2013.

The two events, both involved participants from the region and afar, are our initiatives to facilitate exchange of practical management work of geopark among managers of different cultural background. In the past we have been benefited from the many ideas shared by other geoparks; in these events we also took the opportunity to share work experience of Hong Kong Geopark through actual examples, such as preparation of understandable education materials, innovative science popularization methods, private-public partnership, tour guide system and a new multi-lingual Handbook for Geopark Guides. This is in keeping with the spirit of the Global Geoparks Network, which is to contribute to the network through sharing.

Two E-Classroom sessions conducted for students of the University of Geosciences (Beijing)

Global E-Classroom is one of our innovative programmes using the internet to enable presenters to give real-time presentations to teachers, students and geopark staff in different regions, usually at geopark venues or geosites.

On 21 and 22 May 2013, two E- Classroom sessions were conducted for the students of the University of Geosciences (Beijing). One session conducted at High Island Geo Trail presented the magnificent acidic volcanic columns of Hong Kong Geopark to the students in Beijing. During the other session three staff in Hong Kong shared the actual work of Hong Kong Geopark. Both session aroused the students' interest in and understanding of the geology and management of Hong Kong Geopark.

Over 60 students of the Hong Kong Fanling Lutheran Secondary School received award under the Geopark Schools Programme on 23 May 2013. Among them 13 have gained a higher level of "Ammonite" award, for actively joining two or more Geopark-related activities in the past year, such as field trip to geosites and ceramic workshop.

The Geopark Schools programme is organized to encourage participating students to develop a long-term interest in earth sciences, integrated with ecology and culture, and to explore the links between science and art.

Education Bureau Quality Life-wide Learning Activity Workshop:

Education Bureau organized Quality Life-wide Learning Activity Workshop on 8 March and 23 April 2013, about 50 teachers from local primary and secondary schools participated the Workshop.

By fieldtrip in the Geopark and group discussion, education workers learnt about the guidelines for visiting the Geopark, and also the appropriate method to explain geo-science knowledge to students.

Representatives from Korean Geosite visited Hong Kong Geopark

Prof. Huh Min, representing the Mudeung Mountain Area in Korea, visited Hong Kong Global Geopark on 8 April 2013. The Mudeung Mountain Area is planning to apply for membership of the Global Geoparks Network.

Prof. Huh visited the High Island Geo Trail while representative of Hong Kong Geopark also shared the experience on the management, education activities, geopark guide system and local engagement projects of Hong Kong Geopark. It is through these sharing and visits that the geopark management can be enhanced and the geopark network can be strengthened.

Representatives of 13 geoparks from the Mainland and Japan participated in a "Worksop for Geopark Managers" from 25-28 March 2013 hosted by Hong Kong Global Geopark of China. In addition to the workshop, the participants also visited various geosites and exhibition venues at Hong Kong Geopark to learn more about geopark management and education as well as local engagement programmes. Geopark Schools Shared Science Popularization Initiatives

15 teachers from Geopark Schools and secondary schools attended a seminar on 12 January 2013 to share different initiatives to promote Earth Sciences to students. Under the “Geopark Schools” Programme, various activities have been organized in the past year, ranging from field trips to workshops of ceramic and origami.

“Geopark Schools” is a reward scheme which encourages students to discover the Earth in person and achieve balanced development through a range of activities. Primary and secondary schools interested to join this programme may contact the Geopark Division (e-mail address: info@earthmembers.net).

The Global Geoparks of China Annual Conference 2012 was held in Danxiashan Global Geopark on 9 January 2013. During the conference, major achievements made in 2012, such as the successful organization of the Roundtable Conference in Hong Kong, were reported.
