Asia Pacific Geoparks Network Exchange Programme with Japanese Geoparks Network

To encourage sustainable development in global geoparks and to provide an opportunity for mutual exchange between the China Global Geoparks Networkand the Japanese Geoparks Network, Hong Kong Global Geopark of China, in conjunction with Japan’s Aso Global Geopark, are organizing a three-day Asia Pacific Geoparks Network Exchange Programme in Kyushu, Japan from 5 to 7 November 2014.

Representatives of Hong Kong Global Geopark moderated a panel discussion entitled “Midas Touch – Can We?” during the programme to provide participants with an overview of the integrated protected area system for the protection and management of Hong Kong’s country parks and geopark.

Other topics included developing sustainable geo-tourism, promoting global and regional networking in the Global Geoparks Network, and enhancing the geopark image and visitor enjoyment. The participants are encouraged to share the knowledge and information they acquire with their counterparts in the Japanese Geoparks Network.

To promote geopark concepts and to facilitate knowledge exchange and sharing among the China Global Geoparks Network (CGN), Hong Kong Global Geopark of China is organizing a seven-day Asia Pacific Geoparks Network Exchange Programme in China from 9 to 15 October 2014.

“The programme provides an excellent platform for networking among CGN members and opportunities for participants from Dunhuang Yardang National Geopark and the Gansu area to learn about geopark leaders’ vision and insight on global geoparks.” a spokesman of Hong Kong Geopark said. “Through our partnership with the Lions Nature Education Foundation (LNEF) as well as the geopark experts from Beijing and Zigong Global Geopark, we aim at inspiring knowledge exchange and sustainable development in the CGN.” the spokesman added.

The LNEF is an official charitable entity of Lions Club International. One of the leading non-government organizations in Hong Kong, the LNEF promotes and supports a number of educational and geo-conservation initiatives related to Hong Kong Global Geopark. In response to the worldwide environmental protection scheme and with the aim of enriching Hong Kong’s environmental facilities, a Lions Nature Education Centre was established in 1990.

Students from Itoigawa Global Geopark of Japan and Hong Kong Global Geopark of China gather in Hong Kong

 
“My Favourite Geosite in Hong Kong” Internet Voting

More than 50 students and staff from Itoigawa Global Geopark of Japan and Hong Kong Global Geopark of China are gathering in Hong Kong for a five-day student-exchange programme from 21 to 25 August 2014. The programme comprises visits to geo-sites, a guided tour of the Hong Kong Global Geopark Volcano Discovery Centre, knowledge exchange, and cultural sharing sessions.

The sister relationship between Itoigawa Global Geopark of Japan and Hong Kong Global Geopark of China was signed in November 2009, and students from both sister geoparks have visited each other annually since then.

“It is our great pleasure to have established this continuous collaboration with Itoigawa Global Geopark. This programme presents a valuable opportunity for our next generation of leaders to develop global vision and enrich their portfolio in earth science and cross-cultural cooperation.” a spokesman of Hong Kong Geopark said.

Hong Kong Global Geopark Volcano Discovery Centre at Sai Kung

 
“My Favourite Geosite in Hong Kong” Internet Voting

The opening ceremony of Hong Kong Global Geopark Volcano Discovery Centre was held on 15 July 2014 and the Centre is ready for public visit for free now. Conveniently located at Sai Kung Waterfront Park, the Centre is accessible by a wide range of public transport. It is an ideal point for embarking on an exploration in the Hong Kong Geopark.

The 1,000-square-foot centre showcases a 1:1 scale hexagonal exhibit to show the size of the rock formations. A range of rock specimens, with some collected locally and many others from other places around the world, are also on display. Visitors to the Centre can take a peek at the huge columns before they depart for visiting the marvelous Geopark. By observing the exhibits, they would also be able to better understand the geological background and uniqueness of Hong Kong’s hexagonal columns. Hexagonal rock columns, which are a major feature of the Geopark, were produced by a series of violent volcanic eruptions in Sai Kung 140 million years ago.

To facilitate visitors, both local and from overseas, the Centre offers trilingual counter services in Cantonese, Putonghua and English as well as comprehensive information to advise visitors the best way to explore the Geopark. Hong Kong Global Geopark to share experience with students and teachers of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan)

Representatives of Hong Kong Global Geopark have been invited to visit the China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and Dabieshan National Geopark from 11 to 13 June 2014 to deliver three lectures titled "Cultural differences between Chinese Global Geoparks and other Global Geoparks", "Enhancement mechanism of Global Geoparks – Revalidation" and "Preparations to become a Member of the Global Geoparks Network – Examples from Hong Kong Global Geopark".

New staff of Hong Kong Geopark have taken the opportunity to join the visit with a view to getting first-hand experience in geopark management. The visit fosters our cooperation and knowledge sharing with universities and showcases Hong Kong Geopark's long-term commitment to contributing actively to the China Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network.

Hong Kong Geopark School Programme 2014/15

To popularize earth science and to raise public awareness on geo-conservation, Hong Kong Geopark held the school morning assembly under the "Hong Kong Global Geopark School Programme 2014/15" at two of the Hong Kong Geopark Schools -- Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School on 15 May 2014 and SKH Tang Shiu Kin Secondary School on 16 May. The ceremonies were well attended by over 1,600 students and the Geopark School programme enabled them to grasp the concept of Hong Kong Global Geopark.

Hong Kong Geopark staff continued to visit the Kau Yan College and T.W.G.Hs Li Ka Shing College, through their Campus Radio Station and TV broadcasting, to share the importance of earth science education with more than 1,600 students on May 22 and 23.

To diversify student's learning experience, a series of educational activities including guided visits, exhibitions and global E-classroom sessions will be tailor-made for the geopark schools. "Hong Kong Geopark is committed to enhancing geoscience education in Hong Kong Geopark Schools." Spokesman of Hong Kong Geopark said.

Hong  Kong Geopark shares experience with Lesvos  Global Geopark in Greece

The representatives of Hong Kong Geopark was invited to visit the Lesvos Global Geopark in Greece from 30 April to 4 May 2014 to share their experience with the local management authorities. Lesvos Geopark is one of the earliest global geopark established and they have abundant experience in promoting the geotourism and engaging local communities.

Apart from visiting the geosites, Hong Kong Geopark also met with the local authorites, students and the media. Through mutual visits and experience sharing, the geopark management enhanced the cooperation and exchanges in the network and thus promote Geopark movement effectively. This visit also geared up Hong Kong Global Geopark for their revalidation next year.

E-classroom hosted by Hong Kong Geopark to celebrate Earth Day 2014

Hong Kong Global Geopark hosted an e-classroom session on the Earth Day, 22 April 2014 under the theme "Treasure our natural resources and forge a sustainable future". During the session, over 40 primary school students from Zigong Global Geopark visited the distinct and diversified geological, natural and cultural beauty at the Sharp Island Geo-site virtually. This event opened windows for the effective collaboration among the China Global Geoparks Network and reinforced the awareness of science popularization in the region.

“Quality Life-wide Learning Activity Workshop” for teachers

Secondary school teachers of Integrated Science and Geography are responsible for introducing Earth Science to their students to help them understand the wonders of the world of science and encourage them to explore different scientific fields. To support the teachers, Hong Kong Geopark and the Education Bureau held a workshop called "Quality Life-wide Learning Activity Workshop" on 17 March. Staff from Hong Kong Geopark provided a guided tour of the main attractions in the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region of the geopark – the East Dam of the High Island Reservoir and Sharp Island. Twenty teachers joined the outdoor tour, exploring the stunning hexagonal columns formed by the great power of the nature and experiencing an effective exchange of experience for the benefit of science education. We look forward to their students following them to experience the fun and fascination of outdoor learning.

Hong Kong Geopark participates in geo-education workshop at German World Heritage Site Messel Pit

Hong Kong Geopark was invited by the European Geoparks Network to be a keynote speaker at a workshop at Germany's World Heritage Site Messel Pit, entitled "Earth Discovery Concepts, Geo-Education & Science Transfer in Science Societies" from 28 February to 1 March 2014. Other speakers included Dr. Margarete Patzak, Prof. Nikolas Zouros and Dr. Marie-Luise Frey from the Global Geoparks Network.

With the support of the Minister of Land and Resources and the Office of the China Geoparks Network, the Hong Kong Geopark representative shared at the workshop the experience of the China Geoparks Network in its science-popularization endeavours. In addition, new exhibitions showcasing the global geoparks of China were launched at the Messel Pit World Heritage Site and an E-class was arranged between Hong Kong and the workshop participants. The event also included a visit to the Senkenberg Museum, which stimulated discussions on potential cooperation between museums in Hong Kong and Germany.

Messel Pit provides the one of the best preserved sites of early Eocene flora and fauna in the world. It signed a cooperation arrangement with Hong Kong Geopark in 2013. The mutual exchange during this visit was fruitful for the continuous development and science-popularization activities of global geoparks. Hong Kong Geopark will continue to foster our role as a facilitator in making an active contribution to the Global Geoparks Network.

Featuring all the 29 Global Geoparks of China including the Hong Kong Global Geopark, this is the first and the most comprehensive guide book ever created for the China Geopark Network. Each chapter opens with two to three attractions in each geoparks which reviews the best spots one could enjoy in the parks. Visit to the Zigong Global Geopark of China,Sichuan

Hong Kong Geopark was invited to visit Zigong Global Geopark of China from 15 to 18 February 2014. During the visit, representatives of Hong Kong Geopark shared our experience in management, networking and science popularization of geoparks.

On 16 February 2014, Hong Kong Geopark paid a visit to Zigong Dinosaur Museum and seized this opportunity to interact with curators and dinosaur experts therein. A e-classroom session was also hosted for management staff of the museum and the Zigong Global Geopark.

This visit has boosted Hong Kong Geoparks's role as a knowledge exchange and sharing platform in the region. 'We look forward to collaborating with our counterparts in the China Global Geopark Network to showcase the very best of China Global Geoparks to the world.' a spokenman of Hong Kong Global Geopark said.

Hong Kong Global Geopark has just issued our annual report which summarized the major work in 2013.  During the report period, the key task was to prepare for the revalidation on all fronts, including presentations to the advisory body and various briefings to colleagues from different divisions of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department following a major revision of our operation guidelines and management plan.

To secure continuous support from our counterparts, networking with the Chinese Geoparks Network (CGN), Asian Pacific Geoparks Network (APGN) and the Global Geoparks Network was a major focus. We have arranged two workshops for geopark managers of CGN and APGN and assisted the CGN in training for aspiring geopark managers from Africa.

Hong Kong Geopark Speaking on Fossils at Hong Kong Science Museum

Hong Kong Geopark is invited to deliver a public seminar titled “Does Hong Kong Have Fossils? An Introduction to the Ancient Creatures and Environment of Hong Kong” at the Hong Kong Science Museum on 4 January 2014. During the seminar, representative of Hong Kong Geopark shared with the audience exciting fossil findings and evidence of ancient creatures in Hong Kong. The seminar has received enthusiastic responses from the general public and the local media. In order to reach a broader audience, representative of Hong Kong Geopark was further interviewed by local media for the production of educational programme.

In 2014, Hong Kong Geopark will continue to strengthen our science popularization programme and to further enhance our visitor centres by inclusion of new fossil exhibits. Those interested in fossils may check out the existing fossil exhibits at the Lions Nature Education Centre (Hyberlink) and visit us often for updates on new fossil exhibits.
