Volcano Discovery Centre

A Volcano Discovery Centre at downtown Sai Kung will tell the story of ancient volcanoes in Hong Kong and how they shaped the landscape over the last 100 million years. The Centre introduces the volcano types, their eruption styles and the formation of hexagonal rock columns. Rock specimens produced by different types of volcanoes are displayed which are collected around the world. The method to explore the volcanic history is also explained. As the Centre is to be established at the gateway to Hong Kong Geopark, it will serve as a convenient starting point for visitors.

The Volcano Discovery Centre is the first exhibition centre on the theme of volcanology in Hong Kong. It tells the story of ancient volcanoes in Hong Kong and how they shaped the landscape over a long period. The Centre introduces volcano types, their eruption styles and the formation process of the hexagonal rock columns. On display are rock specimens from around the world produced by different types of volcanoes. The volcanic history of the area is explained as well.

Volcanic eruptions are classified according to their strength, e.g. plinian eruption. In the Centre, volcanic eruptions are classified as explosive eruptions, which are the most vigorous and are usually adjacent to a convergent plate boundary, and effusive eruptions, in which lava flows slowly and silently, and which usually lie along divergent plate boundaries.

The average diameter of the columns in Hong Kong is about 1.2 m, with the largest ones measuring up to 3 m. Since their cross-section is hexagonal, they are aptly named “hexagonal rock columns”. The columns are tall and thick, and are spread across a wide area. Set in a region of striking coastal landscapes, their natural beauty rivals that of basalt columns in other parts of the world.

The Igneous Rock gallery displays rock specimens produced by different types of volcanoes around the world, allowing close observation and comparison.
