Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark Joins Local Communities for Lunar New Year Celebrations

Rural villages across Hong Kong held celebration ceremonies to usher in the Year of the Monkey. The seven Hing Chuen Yeuk villages in the Double Haven Geo-Area of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark were no exception. We were very pleased to be invited to the Lunar New Year celebration organised by the seven villages. It was a joyful day, with the villagers and partners treated to a traditional Hakka Feast of Nine Dishes. There was also an auspicious kirin dance to welcome the Year of the Monkey.

The villagers said it was a particularly happy occasion with last month’s successful launch of the kaito ferry service between Ma Liu Shui and Lai Chi Wo.

A representative of the Hong Kong Geopark said, “The new kaito ferry service to Lai Chi Wo offers great convenience to the public. The service will help invigorate Lai Chi Wo and the surrounding areas by bringing more visitors, which will help promote sustainable local development and geotourism. Looking ahead, we will continue to help preserve and publicise valuable Hakka and fishing village culture through the Hong Kong Geopark platform. We will work closely with the local communities and other stakeholders to further the area’s sustainable development. We believe Lai Chi Wo will be a role model for other local communities.”
